CONSULTATIONS with transport interests have been promised by Transport Minister Norman Fowler in the Commons, before the European proposals for common European driving licences are put to Parliament.

He recalled that agreement had been reached at the Council of Transport Ministers last month on the form of a directive which would provide for driving licences to be based on a com mon model. They had also agreed that citizens of one member state who went to live in another could exchange their licences, subject to certain safeguards relating in particular to licences for heavy goods and public service vehicles.

The Minister pointed out that the United Kingdom had entered a formal reservation at the Council meeting.
