THE HARD shoulders on the M1 in Bedfordshire have been strengthened so that heavy vehicles can be diverted on to them during future maintenance work.
Stating this when he was questioned in the House of Commons about this stretch of the motorway, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Kenneth Clarke said there had been no fault in the construction of the M1 in Bedfordshire which made it particularly vulnerable to traffic use and axle weights.
The loadings had been well in excess of those envisaged and the carriageway had reached the life for which it had been designed.
