SPENDING. on research into developing batteries for powering road vehicles is to be doubled by the Chloride Group, it was announced this week. Chloride will this year spend more than 1 m. The company's newly formed motive power projects group is concerned with Greater Manchester Transport's Silent Rider bus and the development of two battery-operated electric delivery vehicles, one a 5cwt and one a 35cwt.

Other projects for electric delivery vehicles have been completed in Holland and are under consideration in France. Research has shown that the market for such vehicles is considerable, says the company.
