Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Ashley Taylor • Plenty of regular customers were among the 152 entrants of the Manchester round on Sunday and when it came to the prize-giving, by Aid. R. W. Brain of Coventry, the old hands carried off a big share. Some others were fourand five-year award winners.

Among the winners of earlier years was E Pankhurst (Tate and Lyle Ltd., Foden) who was best in class E2 with 53 penalty points, to whom went the trophy for the best Clicence driver. At Manchester there is a special prize in recognition of the best showing on the Highway Code and the road circuit. Pankhurst was penalty-free in both but so were the runners-up in his class, T. N. Kinder (Shell-Mex and BP Ltd., Albion} and A. Gosling (T. Wall and Sons Ltd., AEC), as well as certain other competitors, and it was not until other factors had been taken into account that the tie was settled in favour of Pankhurst.

The lists included 10 British Railways, nine municipal and eight public authority drivers

but most were for ancillary users. BRS and Springfield Transport Ltd. were represented but generally speaking the haulage side was conspicuous by its absence. Minimum debit of the day was that of R. B. Walker (BRS Parcels, Austin) with 42 in class D. After retaining a clean sheet on the Code, Walker's remaining effort was remarkably consistent-10 on the road and 12-10-10 on the manoeuvring tests. The second man in class D. S. Isaac (Tate and Lyle Ltd, Bedford), was actually rather better on the tests but spoilt his chance by a Highway Code error.

Competition among the 38 teams was close, Bleachers Association Ltd. finally emerging as the winners of the section.

The first three classes were all won by drivers who were .placed at Manchester last year, there being 'a nice division of function with class A going to a C-licence man, class B to a municipal driver and class C to a haulage worker.

The event was run on the parking ground of Shell Chemicals (UK) Ltd. at Carrington, Cheshire.
