Some Details Of the Latest Passenger-carrying Vehicles Purchased by a Yorkshire Municipal!".

IN dealing with the use and development of six-wheeled passengercarrying vehicles, the names of a number of important municipal authorities have loomed very large, and one of the latest to be added to the list is that of the Halifax Corporation. A short time ago the tramways department of this corporation took delivery of six 26-seater four-wheeled buses of the well-known Karrier CL4 type, and that it is desirous of keeping abreast of the times is indicated by the fact that it has recently purchased from Karrier Motors, Ltd., Huddersfield, a small fleet of passenger-carrying sixwheelers—actually six machines—of

the maker's CL6 type for use in the town, and one of these is shown in an illustration apnearing on this page. Igtis model, which is the smallest of

the Karrier range of rigid-frame sitwheeled passenger machines, is becoming increasingly popular. In its standard form it is §upplied with a forward-driving position And is designed to accommodate 32 passengers. In the case of the type of vehicle which has just been supplied to the Halifax authorities, however, the driver is placed in the usual position behind the engine, and the vehicle is only arranged to seat 26 people.

The outstanding chassis components consist of a 47-56 h.p. aix-cylinderedl engine, the power of which is transmitted through a fabric-fined, adjustable cone clutch to a four-speed-andreverse gearbox. Both engine and gearbox are mounted on a sub-frame which is three-point suspended. The two rear axles, which are driven by inverted worm gearing, are attached at each end of broad senti-elliptic springs, which are free to pivot on a central fulcrum bracket fixed to the frame. Air-pressure brakes operate on all four driving wheels and are progressively applied by depression of the pedal, The hand brake takes effect on the' transmission behind the gearbox. An adapter on the air-pressure brake reservoir is available for the inflation of the 32-in. by 6-in. pneumatic tyres which are fitted on all wheels.

Our illustration clearly shows that the body is constructed on pleasing lines. It is of the one-man-controlled pattern, and the entrance, which is at the front on the near side, is of particularly wide proportions. An emergency door is incorporated in the rear panel. Ten interior roof lights, destination indicator, Golden Glow headlamps, spot lamp on the near side and the usual side and tail lamps are fitted, current being supplied te them by a 12-volt, constant-voltage lighting set with dynamo of the positive-drive typo.
