7% during 1986/87 and by almost 3% in 1987/88; bus mileage increased by 7% in English metropolitan areas, and 17% elsewhere between 1985/ 86 and 1987/88.
Operating costs per bus mile fell by over a fifth in real terms because of reductions in staff and increased use of smaller buses, says the DTp.
There was also a reduction in direct subsidy by local authorities outside London of more than £110 million.
Private operators not pre viously owned by the National Bus Company increased their share of local bus mileage from 8% in 1985/86 to 14% in 1987/ 88, and their share of passengers from 3% to 6%.
