• Scania is considering extending the fitment of its Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) truck engine management system beyond the current EDCequipped 350kW (470hp) veeeight 14-litre engine used in its top-of-the-range 143M 470 tractive unit.
Scania's vice-president of engineering and manufacturing, Stig Ericsson, says that he can "foresee the introduction of EDC on other engines as well, provided there is a market demand for it".
The EDC system is a "drive by wire" unit set between the fuel pump control rack and the throttle pedal.
A microprocessor takes readings of air pressure and temperature, engine revs, coolant temperature, oil pressure and a number of other variables, including throttle depression. It then commands the fuel pump control rack stepper motor, or solenoidcontrolled hydraulic activator, to allow the optimum amount of fuel through to the injectors.
EDC replaces the mechanical governor and allows the revs to be extended in lower gears.
