DESPITE two dock strikes in 1984, tonnage of cargo handled at Dover Harbour increased by nearly six per cent in the first 11 months of last year.

From the period of January to November 1984, 8.2m tonnes were handled. Over the same period in 1983 the figure was 7.8m.

The number of commercial road haulage units increased too by 7.5 per cent to 684,220. A tractive unit and semi trailer counts as two units. Other ro-ro freight fell in 1984 by around two per cent on the previous year.
