its director of personnel. Mr Wilson, who was previously head of employee relations, will now be responsible for training, manpower development, and industrial relations at the NFC and will report to the chief executive Peter Thompson.

Before joining the NFC at headquarters, Mr Wilson had been at National Carriers for five years as group director of personnel. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport, the Institute of Personnel Management, and the British Institute of Management.

Tom Gourley has become

supply and distribution manager for Volvo Bus (Great Britain). He has worked in vehicle sales for Crane Fruehauf and Ailsa Northern, and in the past was field sales manager for Volvo Bus.

In his new position Mr Gourley is responsible for the supply and distribution of B55 doubledecker chassis and B58 coach chassis to bodybuilders and dealers. He is based at the Volvo British headquarters in Irvine, Ayrshire.

Peter Judson has moved to take up the position of United Kingdom director of operations for Hertz Truck Rental and Leasing. Mr Judson started his career in truck rental with Hertz 12 years ago, and is rejoining the company after a period with competitor, Avis.

V. L. Churchill, manufacturer of garage equipment and tools and a subsidiary of TI Transport Equipment, has appointed Peter Royle as director and general manager. He now has overall responsibility for the operation of V. L. Churchill and will report directly to TI Trans

port Equipment managing director Leslie Watson. Mr Royle was carrying out a special assignments role within the Tube Investments Group before accepting thhis new post.

Among those appointed as members of the Manpower Services Commission as from January 1 1980 is Victor Paige who was recommended by the Confederation of British Industry. Mr Paige is deputy chairman and a board member of the National Freight Coporation and has also recently become chairman of the Port of London Authority.

A member of the Manpower .Services Commission since 1974, Mr Paige also served or the Road Transport Industrial Training Board between 1 9724. The MSC is responsible for running the public employment and training services.

In addition to those receiving awards in the New Year honours list mentioned in last week's CM, the following people from the transport world were named as British Empire Medallists: A. G. Obituary

We record with regret the death of Johnny Johnson at 57.

Johnny, who was transport editor with Garage and Transport magazine, was a CM feature writer from 1972-77, and reported on a wide range of operational and legal matters. He spent many years in transport, Was on the staff of Railway Gazette from 1961-69, and was with Motor Transport for twoand-a-half years before joining CM. He leaves a wife and two daughters.
