According to Murray Clifford, a New Zealander on the staff of Truck and Bus Transportation of Australia, the standards demanded of British bus drivers are among the toughest in the world. He came to England to train as a bus driver and is proud of his public service vehicle licence.
He doubts whether some of Sydney's bus drivers would ever complete the course. Having driven coaches in India, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, where kamikaze pilots abound, Murray is not easily frightened but one Sydney driver scared him so much that he seriously considered giving up bus travel.
