John Darker's report "Welsh hauliers on their mettle(CM. December 1 5, 1 978) makes me sad and a bit mad. The same thing is likely to happen in other areas if we are not careful. While I agree Wales has had a hard time with the shortage of work, many other areas have had similar experiences and have, with the co-operation of other .hauliers, shrewdly trimmed fleets in order to get proper earnings and a proper return for the cash invested.
Thrashing vehicles and drivers into the ground is prehistoric thinking.
The secret of success or just survival is top earnings for in dividual vehicles and continuity of employment, which can only be achieved by restricting the number of vehicles available for hire or reward to those needed for the amount of work available in the area.
I would once again advise those who are well 'established and intend surviving, that should they have any older-type vehicles which they intend disposing of, please do not put them on the market but rather scrap them. On the other hand, if you have any good-quality new-type vehicles for disposal, hold on to them until you get a proper, realistic price, giving preferential 'treatment to RHA members.
May I remind hauliers that never was it more important that you should obtain proper earnings, as replacing vehicles will become more and more difficult during the next two years.
