Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A report in CM, December 8 under the heading "Target drivers" said that RHA members are urged to give their drivers Giro facilities for foreign trips.

As an international yacht transporter, I asked my Post Office and my bank for details of this facility, but neither knew of anything other than the National Girobank.

I wonder whether you would care to publish information on what is obviously a very desirable scheme, so that international transporters can approach their Post Offices and banks for the service.

D. JENNANI, Petworth, Sussex.

Michael Diaconno, RHA assistant executive officer, told us that he had not yet had confirmation from the Giro service on how feasible a scheme for operators abroad would be. The RHA recommends that drivers carry as little hard currency as possible for tolls, etc, but advises that they carry the balance of their needs, including adequate reserves, in travellers' cheques.

This is safer than issuing the driver with credit cards and also means that the operator knows how much his driver has, whereas the use of credit cards has an element of risk, especially where the limit is very high. In case of emergency the RHA recommends the use of the AMIf NI credit scheme, which is operated by the IRU in Geneva and has a maximum of 3,000 Swiss Francs. Cards and further details are obtainable from the RHA. — Editor.
