THE FIRST Scammell Routeman eight-wheeler to feature Leyland's recentlyintroduced TL11 engine has gone into service with the Amey Roadstone Corporation in Somerset.
ARC operates a large fleet of Routemans and have ordered more for this year.
ARC wants to evaluate the TL11-engined machine and may specify this power unit in future vehicles.
The 'TL11 is a conventional six-cylinder inline turbocharged engine, rated at up to 186kW (250bhp). The ARC Routeman features the TL11A, rated at 155.9kW (209bhp) at 2,200rpm (net to BS AU 141a) compared to the 141.8kW (190bhp) of the 680 engines in ARC's existing Routemans.
The torque characteristic of the TL11A is better, too, than that of the 680. At 1,300rpm the TL11A puts out 820.4Nm (605Ibft) compared to the 680's 678Nm (5001bft) at 1,400 rim Another interesting feature of the ARC Routeman is that it is fitted with the first new lightweight Tasktip body. This reduces tare weight and in. creases payload, particularly in the aggregate business where body height is normally limited to about 1.2m (4ft).
The Craven Tasker light alloy extruded section used for the top and bottom rails and the cross-bearers has been redesigned to take account of the revised strength-to-weight factors. The top rails are deeper to give added resistance to accident damage. The body has a completely clear side and is of 15cum (20cuyd) capacity.
Wheelbase of the Routeman is 5.76m (18ft I lin). It has a six-speed David Brown constant-mesh gearbox driving through to a hubreduction rear bogie with third differential lock.
