CHRYSLER is to offer the Cummins NTE 250 power unit as an option on two of its Dodge 300-Series models, but this option will only apply to Europe, from June onwards.
The two vehicles to be offered with the Cummins are the 4238TD tractive unit and the 4238KD rigid chassis, which is designed for drawbar operation.
To suit the Dodge driveline, the Cummins has been chosen with the optional specification which gives 244kW (332bhp) at 2,100 rpm and maximum torque of 1,343Nm (9281bft), both figures DIN installed.
Even so, the Cummins unit has a maximum rpm of 100 fewer than Chrysler's own engine.
The Cummins NTE 350 is the 14-litre in-line six-cylinder engine which was introduced at the Paris Show last year. Cummins say that this engine, which is both turbocharged and after-cooled, is up to 15 per cent more economical.
It is also more flexible, quieter and lighter, says the manufacturer. Like other engines in the E range, the 350 has the so-called "big cam." The diameter has been increased by 12mm (0.5in) to 63mm (2_5in).
