Bobby Lawrence has taken over as chairman of the National Freight Corporation following the retirement of Sir Dan Pettit.
He is a former general manager of British Rail Sundries Division, now National Carriers, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport. He is also a vicechairman of the British Railways Board, a post he will continue to hold.
Atlas Express Group has made several management changes.
Tony Keating, managing director of Atlasair, has joined the group board, as has Peter Farmer who has also been promoted to managing director of Eurofreight.
John Murley, previously managing director, has become chairman of Eurofreight.
Towmaster, the_trarisport division of Bell's, the whisky distiller, has appointed Dr Norman Jones as managing director (business development). Dr Jones will have the responsibility for developing the .division's progress in the UK and abroad. Before joining Towmaster, he was with P and O.
J. Murray has been appointed a member of the Special Panel of the Transport Tribunal.
He is Assistant Principal and Dean of faculty of professional studies at Napier College. Mr Murray succeeds Prof D. McDonald, who has held the position since 1959.
Hopeton Turner has become a management trainee with British Road Services.
He is currently with Southern BRS. In March he begins a six-month management development course.
Paul Shaw has been appointed public relations officer of National Travel, based at Victoria Coach Station.
His previous jobs have been with various regional newspapers.
Lewis Gove, chief engineer of Lancaster City Transport, is retiring at the end of February.
He has held this post since local government reorganisation and also served Aberdeen Corporation for the previous 35 years.
The Oakley Group has appointed Derek Avis as sales director. He is concentrating on developing sales of new and used commercial vehicles and bodywork.
He previously spent 12 years with the Arlington Motor Company.
Lars Malmros has been appointed chairman of Volvo Trucks (Great Britain). Robert Smith joins the board, while Per Gyllenhammar, the previous chairman, has left the board of the British company.
Volvo is also re-organising its truck, bus and BM earthmoving activities into separate legal entities incorporated under Volvo Commercial Vehicles Corporation.
Following internal reorganisation, Scania (Great Britain) has appointed three new regional sales managers.
Norman Stephenson is responsible for the South-East, South and South-West.
Derrick Taylor is regional sales manager for the Midlands, and Hugh McKee is responsible for Northern Ireland, Scotland and the North of England.
All three men have previous experience in the commercial vehicle industry.
