An appeal which would result in the ever co-ordinated bus service between intoul and Keith, Banffshire, has been Ad by the Secretary of State for the roninent. His decision reverses that of ;cottish Traffic Commissioners.
he Commissioners had insisted, when ting a road service licence to Mr Lam G. Low for a stage carriage service bie route, that he should not be allowed ick up or set down passengers between ftown and Keith. This followed ctions by the established operators, Mr I. Smith of Central Garage, Keith, and srs F. and A. Paterson of Dufftown, ollowing an appeal against imposition se condition by Banff County Council, aquiry was held in Keith on November At the inquiry the appellants claimed Mr Low's proposed service would not parch on that already operated by Mr h. They pointed out that removal of the lition would allow for the first time a
co-ordinated service over the route. The Commissioners had admitted that the condition would be difficult to enforce and would represent a hardship for intending passengers and for Mr Low.
The county council has tried unsuccessfully to rationalize the services in question by mutual agreement. It was satisfied that more than one service was necessary and was prepared to consider assisting both operators financially if necessary. Mr Smith maintained that the county council was prepared to offer more generous terms to Mr Low than himself. This was denied by the appellants.
In his written decision the Secretary of State approves of the appellants' endeavours to rationalize the services by agreement. He says that he is confident that this is in the best interest of public transport especially where financial assistance from the local authority is at stake.
