ALTHOUGH they agreed the existing bus service did not meet requirements of nine apprentices who travel from the Lanarkshire villages of Rigside and Douglas Water for training in the Motherwell and Bellshill area, the Scottish Traffic Commissioners, sitting in Glasgow last week refused permission for P. and D. McCabe, of Douglas Water, to operate a mini-bus service.

The Western S.M.T. Co. Ltd., and William Stokes and Sons, Carstairs, bus operators, objected to the minibus service. They claimed that, while their combined bus service meant a longer day for the apprentices a new service provided by them would be only 27 minutes longer for the two-way journey than that provided by the mini-bus.

Mr. A. B. Birnie, chairman of the Commissioners, said: "We have to think not only of these lads but of the area as a whole. Their wishes are reasonable, but their effect on the community might be adverse. The difference in time between the two services is not sufficient to tip the balance the other way."
