will refLect lecono By Joanna Bourke LOGISTICS GIANT Wincanton has admitted it is not immune to the effects of the economic downturn. The company warns that for the six months ending 4 February, its financial performance is likely to be at the lower end of predictions as the firm suffers from a slump in volumes in construction, home delivery services and recycling.

Chief executive Graeme McFaull says: "We have moved swiftly to take cost out of our more volume-sensitive operations and reposition the group for a much more challenging economic environment, "We will not be immune to the effects of the downturn, but are encouraged by the resilience of the majority of our business." In December 2008, it emerged that Wincanton is to close its distribution sites , in Gloucester and Trafford Park with the loss of up to 865 jobs ('Unions step in to fight Wincanton job losses', CM 11 December 2008).
