THE London Transport special public hearing on Associated Minibus Operators' (Amos) proposals for minibus services in London will begin on March 1. It is to be held at London's Royal Commonwealth Society, and is expected to last two weeks.

Written evidence for the hearing has been submitted from 65 individuals and bodies including the Greater London Council, 16 borouphs, trades unions, British Rail, other bus operators, taxi drivers, the police and the London Transport Passengers Committee.

Amos has won limited support from the London Transport Passengers Committee, which has decided to support the operation of one of its four proposed cross-London routes.

The motion to support one route was passed after the chairman Ian McLeod had voted in favour after a ten-ten tie.

Supporters of the idea on the committee want to see what the effect of the competition on LT services would be and how the minibuses would improve bus operation in London.

Mr McLeod steps down this year when Transport 2000 director Nick Lester becomes chairman of the LTPC.

Greater London Council transport committee chair Dave Wetzel says that the Amos plan could set the transport clock back more than 50 years.
