AN A-licence application by A. C. Jameson (Transport) Ltd., of Heywood, Lanes, for 12 articulated vehicles, which had a public hearing spread over sittings on January 20, February 4 and 5, reached almost the final stage of a grant being made last. Friday. The North Western deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. A. H. Joiliffe, told the applicants that he had decided to make a grant as requested —but he would withhold it until such time as evidence was produced to show that the trailers of another company, which the tractors would haul, came within Section 167 of the 1960 Act.

• It was said that Jameson provided an extension service to the Continent in conjunction with shipping and forwarding agents, Jameson Europa Ltd., via Southampton and Tilbury docks. Jameson Europa owned six TIR trailers which were hauled in this country by A. C. Jameson (Transport). Mr. Jolliffe .ruled that unless a trailer was owned, or in the operator's possession under an agreement for hire purchase, hire or loan, its' operation did not come within the Act, and he decided there had been • no evidence submitted on such grounds.

Mr. J. Backhouse. for the applicant company, submitted that a trailer was not a specified vehicle; an operator could pull anyone's trailer so long as his own plates were on the trailer being pulled. provided he held a relevant licence.

The application, with the surrender of existing licences, involved two additional attics to be used on a balanced trunk service between Lancashire and Southampton; the inclusion of Essex on the • normal user, so that the Tilbury crossChannel route could be used; and the use of flat and van. T1R trailers.

The applicants stressed the .growing demand for haulage to the Continent. While the application was for general goods within areas which included Lancashire. Sussex. Hampshire, Dorset, Berkshire, Surrey and Essex, Mr. Backhouse said the bulk of the vehicles were required to continue a five-vehicle eachway night trunk service between Lancashire and Southampton.

When a representative of British Road Ferry Services Ltd. gave evidence for B.R.S., he said his company operated a Continental service with 10 vehicles taken over from B.R.S. in the Metropolitan area. Vehicles were also used from the Preston and Manchester depots of B.R.S., and application was to be made to transfer them to British Road Ferry Services Ltd. Mr, Backhouse alleged that meantime this was illegal operation.

The. applicants, to meet the L.A.'s decision, indicated that the Jameson Europa trailers would be transferred to A. C. Jameson (Transport) Ltd.
