Hayward, manager of the company's experimental department, will share the Gresham Cooke prize, awarded by the automobile division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, with Dr.-Ing. P. W. Glamman, of Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The three men were joint authors of a paper entitled "Some experiences with a differentially supercharged diesel engine ", delivered to the division last year. Founded by a gift from Mr. Roger Gresham Cooke, M.P., the new prize is. the first given specifically to the automobile division of the Institution. It is to be awarded annually to the authors of papers which are outstanding contributions to export suitability.

Mr. Frank Davies, assistant traffic manager of Manchester and Salford Co-operative Society, has been appointed manager-designate, and will take over responsibility in April, when Mr. R. Clark, manager, retires. Mr. Davies has been with the Society for almost 10 years, joining it from the C.W.S. motor trades department in 1955, first as foreman mechanic, then as chief mechanical engineer. He has been assistant manager since 1959.

Mr. S. M. Hirst has been appointed service manager of Rocester Services Ltd., the parts and service company of J. C. Bamford (Excavators) Ltd. He was previously service co-ordinator, Mr. S. W. Fryer has been appointed managing director of Advance Motor Supplies Ltd., a subsidiary of the Sheepbridge Engineering group. Mr. W. reasdale has been appointed a director af A.M.S. and will continue to manage .he Glasgow branch.

ing subsidiary. Mr.' Adler will join S.P.D. on March 1. He is at present technical director with Smith's Delivery Vehicles Ltd., Newcastle upon Tyne, and at one time was with the de Havilland Group, where he became chief project engineer on air conditioning.

Mr. John Davies, vice-chairman and managing director of Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd.. is to be director-general of the new Confederation of British Industry and by the autumn is expected to be working full time on this 'appointment. The Confederation is the body now being formed through a merger of the Federation of British Industries, the British Employers' Confederation and the National Association of British Manufacturers. Mr. Davies, 49, is chairman of the F.B.I. technical legislation committee. He will be succeeded at ShellMex and B.P. by Mr. T. R. Grieve, 56, who is at present regional co-ordinator (oil) for the U.K. and Eire in the Shell organization. He has been a member of the Shell-Mex and B.P. board since 1959.

At a brief ceremony before the first annual dinner of the Sussex section of the Institute of Transport Mr. S. J. B. Skyrtne, chairman of the section, was invested with a chairman's badge of office by the Institute's president, Mr. Frank

Mr. Barrie Heath has been appointed chairman of the Triplex Safety Glass Co Ltd., of Which he has been managing director since July, 1960:Mr. Heath, who. is 48, will on February 23 succeed Mr. Arthur Pilkington, who remains a director of the parent company, Triplex Hcildings Ltd.

Four senior. executives have been. appointed as special directors of W. P, Butterfield 'Ltd. of Shipley, Yorkshire. They are: Mr. J. K. Williamson (group. secretary) becomes special director--secretarial: Mr. K. A. Bales (group projects manager) — production; . Mr. Leslie Jones (group exports manager)— exports; and Mr. E. G. Green(group accountant)—accountancy. Mr. Williamson becomes chairman of Halladay's Ltd. (metal pressings) and Halladay's Drop Forgings Ltd., of Birmingham, two or the Butterfield member companies.

Mr. V. J. Moorfoot has been appointed assistant solicitor (common law) and an officer of London Transport Board. He will be responsible to the solicitor for all litigation and related common law matters and for prosecutions. Mr. William C. Park, a director and secretary of Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., Preston, has been appointed to the board of Atkinson Vehicles

(Scotland) Ltd., Airdrie. He has been secretary of the Scottish company since its formation in 1959. Aged 59, Mr. Park joined Atkinson as an office boy more than 40 years ago and was elected a director of the Preston concern in 1940.

Mr. Lester E. Willson has been appointed sales manager (London) of The Skefko Ball Bearing Co. Ltd. Mr. Willson was formerly sales manager of the company's automobile division and has been with Skefko for 36 years. He succeeds Mr. G. .1. Steer, who is to retire in May after being the company's southern area manager since 1935, with 'the exception of four years at head office during the last war.

Birfield Filtration Ltd. announces that two top U.S.liquid filtration -executives will visit9reat Britain early nexr month. They are Mr. Edward Mooers, chairman of the board of the Hilliard Corporation,. Elmira, New 'York, and Mt. Finley Steele,: manager of the oil purification division of the same company.

Mr: Ian Maclean has been appointed to Duple Group Sales Ltd. as representative for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Mr. Maclean, who served his apprentice7 ship with Albion Motors Ltd., is chairman of the Scottish branch of the Omnibus Society. Mr. J. Jennings has been appointed to Duple Group Sales Ltd., and will assist Mr. R. Beechey Newman on fleet sales. Mr. Jennings ' joins the Duple Group ' from the Metropolitan-Cammell-Weymann organization.

Mr. D. T. Davies has been appointed retread and repair materials sales manager of the North British Rubber Co. Ltd. at Horseferry Road, London, S.W.1. His successor as regional sales manager for South West and Wales is Mr. D. R. Harris, previously area manager in Hampshire and Dorset.

Mr. D. E. Vincent, of Brown Bros. Ltd., formerly manager at Manchester, has been appointed branch manager at Birmingham in place of Mr. R. H. Coxhill, who is now Midland regional sales manager. Mr. T. D. Dawson, previously manager at Preston, has succeeded Mr. Vincent at Manchester. Mr. G. Lumb, formerly manager of the specialized services branch at Burnley, becomes manager at Preston.
