" 14E rates regional committee no

I longer eiists," said Mr. Robert Barr, the chairman of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., speaking at the annual dinner, on February 4, of Doncaster and District Haulage Rates Committee.

Mr. Barr said that there had recently been considerable misunderstanding With regard to the regional committee. At a meeting in Leeds that afternoon, it had been decided that the employers' panel of the Yorkshire Area Conciliation Board was to be the authoritative body to del with the question of rates, in far as the Licensing Arithority was concerned. He did not mean that the panel would determine rates, but he asked the association,s in Yorkshire to see that their members were satisfied that the rates agreed were acceptable.

The Transport Advisory Council would, in his opinion, bring about some stability or enforcethent of rates. But before the Council becanie ton' 'far advanced with its findings,' the itidus try must try to submit some satisfactory rates schedule for it to examine. If operators did not take that step, they might have to accept what the 'Council decided to inflict upon them.

" Neer in our history," said Mr. Barr, "have we been faced with a more difficult matter than settling this

question of rates," The haulage industry must 'be extremely wary in its tread before it allowed its rates to go into the Statute Book. Operators must be sure that, when they 'had agreed those rates, the railway companies would.wit be allowed to undercut. If We 'fail to organize ourselves within ourselves, there is only one alternative—and that is a dictatorship," he

concluded. • '
