Power Units for Electrical Welding.

The art of welding metals is one which has under. gone much evolution during recent years. There are, as is well known, several processes at the. disposal of automobile and steam engineers, boiler makers, shipbuilders, etc. The .system, however, which appears to be making very satisfactory headway just now is that of wading by means of the electric arc.

Like so many other changes which take place in any branch of industry, the arc welding process has introduced demands for a specially-constructed engine and dynamo, and manufacturers are compelled to pay particular attention to the governing and efficient cooling of the power unit to ensure its maintaining full running-power qualities for a considerablelength of time on end, and, in the case of the dynamo, special winding is called for satisfactorily to meet sudden fluctuations of current which. take place timing welding, it being a case of either full load or no load instantly in this particular process. A company which markets engines particularly suited, for this class of welding is the Parsons Motor Co., Ltd., Town Quay, Southampton. For effecting economical running on the cheaper kinds of fuel, the engines are designed to run on paraffin, and we understand that there is a considerable demand for this particular type of motor. There are ab eady 12 welding concerns using Parsons engines most successfully, and considering the care and attention which this undertaking has devoted to the problems connected with a comparatively new process of welding, it no doubt: fully merits the orders placed upon its books. In addition to this power plant, the company also manufacture marine and stationary engines. Spare Parts for Simms Magnetos.

We have been notified by Simms Motor Units, Ltd., 191, Wardour Street, London, W., that, owing to the number of inquiries which have been received from various sources for the supply of spare parts to Simms magnetos, the company is now in a position to meet all, such requirements and is not only able to effect repairs to magnetos of its own manufacture, but to any type now on the market. This information will appeal to users in England who are running American-built machines fitted with the Simms speciality, a considerable number of which is now being imported into this country.

The management of engineering establishments, and, in fact of manufacturing concerns generally, has, at some time or another to consider the matter of procuring various kinds of pipework and suitable fittings.

This may be necessary for installation purposes when building extensions or alterations are being carried out, or to meet, the demands for the direct, output of certain productions.

A concern to be, well recommended for the. supplying of steel and iron tubes and fittings in innumerable sizes, bends, and shapes is that of John Spencer, Ltd., Wednesbury, Staffs. ; London Office and warehouse : 14, Great St. Thomas Apostle, E.C.

The company's productions cover a wide range of uses and, in addition to the manufacture of patented solid-welded steel flange-pipes, specially suited for high-pressure steam mains and feed pipes, a big trade is carried on in boiler tubes and aecessories, riveted gas and water mains, tanks, gas bottles, petroleum and oil-well boring tubes, and driving points This manufacturer is also in a position to supply castings in brass, iron and steel.

The attention of readers who are considering the installation of pipework for hot-water service directed to the Perkins tube and special joint as being particularly suited to this class of service.
