Rymer Transport, the former Pall-Ex depot that was expelled from the network, has angrily refuted claims that it was failing the system.

The Croydon-based firm was removed from the network three weeks ago amid accusations of service failures (CM 28 Nov-4 Dec).

Rymer admits to having problems meeting deliveries and had resigned from the network anyway.

But it is incensed by a letter from Pates boss Hillary Sharpies to the other depots in the network that describes Rymer as a "running sore" and an "open wound". And it disputes several of the reasons given for its dismissal from the Pall-Ex network.

Pall-Ex claimed that there had been a failure tc return Proofs of Delivery (PODs) to the hub—something that is essential to the smooth running of any pallet system.

But Pall-Ex figures passed to CM show that Rymer regularly achieved high return rates in the network. In fact, two PallEx depots have both recorded lower return rates than Rymer, with one managing to send back just 67.5% of its PODs on one occasion.

Another mason given by Pall-Ex for terminating Rymer's membership was its failure to run a night trunk.

Rymer says this only happened once, when its trunk vehicle was pulled out as it had not been loaded in time.

A letter from Pall-Ex to the depots just two weeks previously showed that it was having trouble coping with the volume of freight being put through its

hub. The letter warned that we are getting significant volumes of freight being brought in late afternoon, which is clogging up distribution bays during the night shift".

Since then, Pall-Ex has introduced a new delivery system; it will soon be moving to a new purpose-built hub.

Additionally, Rymer has been charged almost £800 for Pall-Ex to trunk loads to its replacement depot. Fiveways Express, in the week after its expulsion.

Wenda Jenkins from Rymer says: "They just amaze me...what can I say? We've been thrown out and yet we are getting charged."

As CMwent to press, Rymer was still listed on the Pall-Ex website as its depot for several South London postcodes.

No-one from Pall-Ex was available to comment.
