The appearance of Thrall's new EuroSpine rail wagon for road trailers at this year's busy Intermodal exhibition at Earls Court was timely—only last week the Government announced that it was considering a 44-tonne limit for piggyback road/rail operations as well as for traffic running to and from ports.
But the authorities' body language seems to show a slow-track appro o redeveloping the infrastructure. Clearly what's needed is an urgent progranune of raising bridge heights over a dedicated network, and a far-reaching programme of investment in equipment if more road loads are to be shifted on to the rails.
Intermodal '96 showed that there's no shortage of know-how and equipment: the nation's choked roads show that time is of the essence.
