• TNT Express is opening city-centre depots in Manchester and London at a cost of £6.5m in a bid to increase its share of the next-day parcels market.
The company describes the move as its "most active expansion programme for more than a decade despite the recession".
The Manchester and London depot announcement comes swiftly after a depot opening in Birmingham last month, which created 60 jobs including 22 for drivers, and a £3m Rotherham depot which opened in the summer. The expansion will give TNT Express a total of 29 UK depots.
"We have taken the decision to invest in new depots during the recession in preparation for the upturn when it conies," says Tom Bell, general manager of TNT Express.
"London and Manchester will serve existing and new con
tracts," says marketing manager Steve Doig, adding that the London depot will make it easier to deliver and collect from the city centre. At present TNT's nearest parcels depots are at Hornsey and Stanwell.
Doig says the city-centre depots mean TNT can collect from customers later and still meet 09:00hrs next-day delivery deadlines.
