• At least 29 drivers will lose their jobs when brewer Bass completes a programme of brewery closures beginning next year.
Bass says the cuts will increase efficiency and not affect the amount of beer brewed — a spokesman claims that spare capacity will exist to increase production. The 1,000-strong vehicle fleet will remain unchanged.
First to close is the Heriot Brewery at Edinburgh in the autumn of 1992 with the loss of 110 jobs, including 11 drivers on primary trunking.
The Hope Brewery in Sheffield closes in 1994. A total of 200 jobs will go including 18 drivers. The Cannon Brewery in Sheffield is unaffected. The Cape Hill Brewery at Birmingham is expected to create 50 jobs.
