Motor Manufacturers a Traders has released the late digest of recall campains und the Code of Practice of Vehic Safety Defects. The digest cc ers recalls launched betwel January 1 and June 30.

A total of 41 recall campai were launched involving abou. quarter of a million vehicl€ These were 16 campaigns cove ing 176,155 cars, 19 coverir 87,043 goods vehicles and s covering 1,492 public servi, vehicles.

Twenty five out of the 41 rem campains concerned brake steering defects with a respom rate of 73 per cent for passeng, cars, 75 per cent for goo( vehicles and 84 per cent fi PSV's, representing steady in provement by owners an operators since the Code WE introduced.

Commenting on the respons to recall campains, Transpo Secretary David Howell, said: " is vital that the message gel home to owners and operator that they must respond t vehicle recalls.

"These response rates ar good but they are not goo enough. The car driver, lorry an bus operator should know thz in failing to react quickly to reca notices they may be putting thei own lives at risk and those c others too.

"My department and thi SMMT are looking closely a ways of improving responsi rates further, and determining t( what extent the rates an depressed by, for example changes of ownership which ar( not notified to the DLVC, or th( incidence of goods vehiclE operators carrying out their owr recall modifications so as tc keep their vehicles on the road".
