ONE of the first successful crossings of the Sahara Desert by a haulage contractor on the new African "boom" route, Nigeria, has been pioneered by Scotland's Thomas Bone (Shipping).
The 2,000-mile trek over tortuous road conditions and in stifling heat took the convoy of five trucks—four Scania, one Volvo — six weeks, amazingly without even a puncture.
It cost £15,000, "but was well worth it" said Tom Bone. "It was a fabulous experience even if it did drain us of every bit of mental and physical energy."
The full story of Tom Bone's incredible journey into the unknown can be read in Commercial Motor next week.
