Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An AEC Mandator 32-ton articulated vehicle and a BLMC Mastiff 16-ton rigid were presented to the Mid-Glamorgan Road Haulage Group Training Association by Mr. Eric Tindall, director general of the RTITB, at the official inauguration of the Group last week. The presentation was made to Mr. C. Gullum, chairman of the Association and managing director of the Pontdu Haulage Co. Ltd. on the premises. of Jones Motors Ltd., Kenfig Hill.

A total of 450 vehicles is operated by the six hauliers in the group and the total work force is 650. The vehicles will be used solely for the training of group drivers under the _ direction of a full-time training officer and two instructors.

In addition to Jones Motors and Pontdu Haulage. the Group comprises John Ray mend Transport Ltd., Stadium Transport (Skeweril Ltd., S. Protheroe and Sons (Port Talbot) Ltd. and J. Nelson and Sons (Port Talbot) Ltd.

Knotty Ash take-over

• Ritsons Haulage Ltd., insulated transporters, of Knotty Ash, Liverpool, is to take over the assets of the Kirkby, Liverpool, depot of Union Cartage Co. Ltd., with effect from December 29. This will make Ritsons one of the biggest road hauliers handling refrigerated goods in the North West, with a fleet of about 120 vehicles, most of them refrigerated.

Ritsons plans to move its depot to Kirkby soon after the takeover becomes effective. -We will retain a small depot at Knotty Ash for the benefit of a customer who has a cold store there," said Mr. John Ritson, managing director. The company now expects to handle about two-thirds of Liverpool's meat imports.

Advice on haulage costs

• A new advisory service on the movement of transport casts is planned by the FTA as an aid to the negotiation of haulage rates. Account will be taken of the highly individual nature of operating costs and "to the cardinal principle that rates must therefore be a matter of individual negotiation between supplier and customer". Emphasis will be put not only on the upward movement of costs but on the savings that are possible through greater productivity.

The Association hopes to start the service early in 1970 but meanwhile members who would like interim advice should contact the FTA head office in Croydon.

Carriers' licence amendments

• On Monday, December 1, the Goods Vehicle (Licences and Prohibitions) Amendment No. 2 regulations 1969, came into effect. They make minor amendments to the 1960 regulations so as to make the procedures for applying for and varying carriers' licences under Part 4 of the Road Traffic Act 1960, similar to the procedures for applying for and varying operators' licences under Part 5 of the Transport Act 1968.
