Cambridge now boasts two separate services of motorbuses : the first is from the station to the Bank and to Chesterton, via Sidney Street and Chesterton Lane; the second is from the Rock Hotel, Cherryhinton, to the Station Road corner. On the first-named route three cars run ; one leaves the Station every quarter of an hour, and De Freville Avenue, Chesterton, 20 minutes after. Chesterton, therefore, has a quarter-hour service, and the motorbuses now have undisputed sway on the road, the horse buses having been withdrawn a week ago. The fare charged from the Station to the Bank is one penny, a similar sum being exacted for the run from the Bank to Chesterton, and from the Rock Hotel to Station Road Corner.
The omnibus company has five vehicles licensed : three Scott-Stirling. single-deckers.; one Maudslay vehicle ; and an Arrol-Johnston double-decked motorbus, which, up to the present, the authorities will not permit to ..run through the town. The last-named vehicle serves the Rock Estate and runs, at certain stated intervals, in conjunction with the other route. TheScott-Stirling cars are of 411.p. and, we understand, have proved very satisfactory.: they are found to be cheap to run, quiet, and of ample power for the roads 'with which they have to deal. The other single-decker is a Maudslay, three-cylinder, 2oh.p. car, and it is kept chiefly as a spare and for the private hiring business of the company, which is considerable. This vehicle is one of the first single-deckers made by the Maudslay Motor Company. The depot is well-arranged and has electric light and power, hot water heating, and a fully-equipped machine shop where almost all the necessary repair work can be done.
The manager, Mr. John B. Watford, has every confidence that the undertakin,,t' will prove a success and informs us that, though some of the cars have been running for three months, hardly a trip has been lost during that time, and traffic recipts continue to show an increase every week.
