A 37-YEAR-OLD truck driver has been hailed as a hero after dragging an unconscious driver from a blazing car seconds before it exploded.

John Flower was driving his sixwheel tipper along the A5 near Lutterworth,Leics when he saw people standing around a blazing Peugeot 206 that had been in a collision.

"I ran across the road," he says. "I could see there was an unconscious man slumped over the wheel and he was bleeding from a head wound. The flames were getting worse, his hair and clothes were singed. I undid the seat-belt and just as I dragged him clear the car exploded."

Crash victim Jamie Strange was airlifted to hospital with severe concussion and whiplash injuries, as well as cuts and bruises. He says: "I can't thank John enough. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be here today."

Police are nominating the father-of-three for a bravery award. Sgt Jed Keen says: "This was an outstanding act of bravery which saved a life. Witnesses have told us that John swept past everyone, pushing people aside, to pull the young man out.As soon as the injured man's heels hit the ground the car exploded. We shall be recommending a bravery award."
