Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Second-hand truck sales are all about supply and demand. Steve Banner tal (s to dealers around the country about which vehicles are currently in vogue.

NOT ALL BUYERS of secondhand tractors want high-power engines and big cabs Units with relatively low power and small sleeper cabs will still find homes if the mileage is right.

That's the experience of Anthony Wright, used vehicle sales executive at Scunthorpe Volvo dealership Crossroads.

"We've recently taken in a lot of 1999-vintage FM 6x2s with standard sleeper cabs, 380hp engines, and nine-speed gearboxes," he reports."They're selling well, and one reason is that they've covered only 300,000km apiece, despite the fact they're five years old.

"That's the sort of mileage you'd expect to see on a two-yearold tractor. That works to their advantage because customers seem to be quite bothered about mileage at present.

"I think a lot of them are going to buyers who would normally opt for 4x 2s," he adds "They're certainly not being used at 44 tonnes.

"They've all got RPCs, and we're selling them with a threemonth Volvo warranty and a full service history. We maintained them ourselves.

"It has to be said, however, that they're finished in the previous owner's green and yellow livery."

Alan Perrins, used sales manager at Stoke-on-Trent MAN ERF dealership Beech's Garage, agrees there's still a market for lower-powered tractors. "A lot of people are interested in ERFs powered by Cummins M11 engines at 380 and 405hp because of their fuel economy and reliability," he remarks.

It's a view shared by Steve Wild, sales director at Acuma Fleet Sales of Sandycroft, Deeside. "The other advantage of the Mll is that parts are cheap and easy to find," he points out.
