TORY transport spokesman Norman Fciwler has accused Government of making "a complete farce of consur representation" over the appointment of the new chairman the Central Transport Consultative Committee.
Mr Fowler has complained that both transport minister William Rodgers and prices secretary Roy Hattersley have used the opportunity to make a party political appointment.
The new chairman of the committee — former Labour chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council Frank Higgins — was also responsible for the introduction of the unsuccessful Nottingham "zone and collar" traffic scheme.
Challenge
"What is most objectionable," said Mr Fowler, "is the way in which the Government is now making these appointments on a political basis. The policy will be challenged when Parliament resumes."
Mr Fowler has already asked both ministers ques tions on the appointment, Parliament, about the crite used and salary involved making the appointment.
And Tory shadow pric secretary Sally Oppenheirr commented: "These appaii ments are typical of ti Labour Government. It is great pity, but they have do the same thing with the Pric Commission and the wal authorities."
