'ACILITIES available to lorry irivers on the Al2 trunk road rom London to the East Coast ire to be examined by Departnent of Transport officials. John Horam, Under Secreary for Transport, made this promise after an MP complained, last week, about the grave lack" of facilities.
The A 12 had been of great enefit to the villages and awns it by-passed, said Tony Iewton (Tory, Braintree). But here was a serious tendency ar heavy lorries and coaches D go back into them because hey were the only places there food and other facilities ould be obtained.
Mr Horam said the provision f services was a general problem on various routes which had been brought to the Department's attention, by lorry drivers, on more than one occasion.
Mr Horam was "anxious to see further facilities provided". He had had a meeting with representatives of the TGWU about this general problem.
They had been pressing him for more toilet and cafe facilities, because the drivers did not want to move off main routes and have to go through small villages.
