WHEN Slaughter Deep Freeze. Ltd., YV John Penn Street. London, S.E.13, appeared before the Greenwich magistrate last week for failing to keep a current record on 14 days during January and February, it was stated that the company had changed hands since then. They realized that they were liable, but hoped that the magistrates would take a lenient view.

The company were fined £10 on one summons and ordered to pay £5 5s. costs. The other 13 summonses were not separately dealt with.

Mr. M. Self, prosecuting, said that one of the company's drivers, who was also summoned, had been stopped on January 25 at Aberdeen. January 28 at Hatfield and January 29 at Doncaster. On each occasion his record showed that when seen he should .have been elsewhere.

Mr. A. Butler, traffic examiner, told the magistrate that on February 23 he saw the driver at the company's offices. where he admitted that the records for these three days were false.

"On the other 11 days, no journey times had been recorded at all,said Mr. Butler.

Driver Dismissed

For the company it was stated that the driver had been dismissed for not keeping accurate records. The new owners of. the concern wel'e aware of their responsibilities and were running 80 vehicles quite properly.

The driver, who did not appear, was fined £2 on the first summons. The others were not separately dealt with. In another case, Brian Arthur Fowles, Graham Road, Hackney, trading as the F. and T. Transport Co., was fined £5 and ordered to pay £2 2s. costs for using a lorry for the carriage of goods without a carrier's licence in force. Fowles pleaded guilty by letter and did not appear.

Mr. Self, prosecuting, said that in an interview with a traffic examiner on February 26, Fowles said that he was expecting to take over a licence from another operator when the offence took place.

Nine summonses against the Bermondsey Road Haulage Co., alleging that they had used a lorry without a carrier's licence in force in respect of the vehicle, were adjourned by the magistrate, Mr. A. A. Pereira. until Wednesday this week.
