r'ITY bus services of • Manchester \--• Transport Department are being " stretched to the limit" because of an acute shortage of staff. Last week an official said: "Although we are just about able to keep all our routes running, every day some buses are off the road because we have no crews for them."

Holidays and staff shortages have cut the department's establishment figure by 700 to 4,100. As a result bus crews are putting in an average of 10 hours' overtime a week. Competition from industry and awkward working hours arc blamed.

CHF. A. Logan, vice-chairman of the transport committee, said: "To get labour the job must be made more attractive. The department will have to pay men more money to work split shifts and awkward hours."
