Traction Co., Ltd., was opened at Walley Street, Biddulph, Staffs, on Tuesday. It can accommodate 40 buses, 24 of which are owned by P.M.T. and the remainder by the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., who areprovided with maintenance facilities. The premises replace a P.M.T. depot in Biddulph and another in Mow Cop, as well as the Biddulph garage of Noi.th Western.
Measuring 175 ft. by 83 ft., the garage has folding doors at each end extending the full width of the building, Underfloor heating is provided by steam pipes. At the rear is a sunken workshop with a compressor, oil-storage tank and a bench. Waste oil can be transferred by compressed air to a tank in the roof.
A Dawson vehicle washer has been installed, and Brodie-Kent flow meters are incarporated in' therefuelling equipment. A total of 144 internal and road staff is employed at the depot.
DUTY ROSTER CHANGED TO MEET MEN'S DEMANDS • •
A MODIFIED duty roster is to be tried
at the Princess Road depot of Manchester Transport Department. The busmen want an eight-hour day with seven days off a month, one day more than at present.* The department want them to work 7 hours 38 minutes a day and no change in day-off arrangements.
A trade union spokesman said on Monday that the extra day off sought would be a step towards the goal of a .40-hour 'week of five eight-hour days.
If it is found that the men's plan works efficiently at the Princess Road depot, it will be applied elsewhere. .
INDEMNITY WORDING CHANGED , 'THE passing of the Road Traffic Act.
1960, necessitates a change in the wording of indemnities given by hauliers of abnormal indivisible loads under Part II of the Second Schedule to the Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order, 1955. The reference to Section 30 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, is to be replaced, from September 1, by one to Section 64 of the Road Traffic Act, 1960.
This change is made by the Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order, 1960 (Stationery Office, 2d.).
12-SEATER TAX RULE CHANGED
THE specification of a 12-seat vehicle which qualifies for exemption from purchase tax has been relaxed by the Commissioners of Customs and: Excise. As from Monday, the vertical clearance of at least 3 ft. which is required above the uncompressed seating may be measured over the centre of each passenger seat instead ,of over the whole area of the seating, as before.
This, it is stated, will enable bodybuilders to ensure that the passenger seating is of adequate height, particularly at the front edge.
