Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A PETITION containing 100 sigPA natures which asked for a special Saturday football coach to Preston North End matches was presented to the Northern Traffic Commissioners, at Kendal, last week. It was stated by Mr. G. E. N. Bargh that people who travelled to the matches by train had to take the morning off work and then leave before the end of the match to catch an early train home. Mr. Bargh was • representing Messrs. E. Nelson and Sons, Trafalgar Garage, Arnside, Westmorland. who applied to run a service from Arnside and .district to Preston, for First Division matches.

One of three football supporters who attended the hearing, said that the only time he went by train he arrived at the match 20 minutes late, had to leave 10 minutes before the end and Walked three miles home from Arnside station.

For British Railways, who objected.

Mr. R. J. Flanagan, chief clerk for the Barrow District, said that the train from Arnside arrived at Preston at 2.20 p.m.. and there was time to catch the 5.10 back.

Mr. I. A. T. Hanlon, chairman, said that it seemed the applicants had been running a service to Preston "under a very thin veil of so-called private parties." It was unfortunate that there was a loophole or near-loophole in the law. He went on: " It does not appear that the demand for transport for these matches has been met by the railways. Without any sort of criticism of their services in that area; it does seem that people are not . travelling to these matches by train."

A case had been made out for one vehicle, he said when he granted the application.
