A T a series of 77 special ceremonies I-1 during the next four months, 9,000 London busmen are to receive awards for safe driving. Three drivers who have each driven London buses in safety for 35 consecutive years (a British record shared with three iprovincial drivers) head the list for 1954 awards.
Nearly 1,800 of the drivers will receive. awards for 20 or more years of safe driving. Other awards will he for periods of safe driving of five years or more.
London busmen average 18,000 miles a year.
TIGER CUBS IN ,DEMAND
QRDE,RS for 76 Tiger Cub buses and nine coaches have just been received by Leyland Motors, Ltd. The Western Welsh Othnibus Co., Ltd., have demanded 62 buses to bring their number of Tiger Cubs up to nearly 200.
Thomas Bros. (Port Talbot), Ltd., have ordered four buses to add to four recently purchased, and the Rhondda Transport Co., Ltd., are to augment their fleet of nearly 30 Tiger Cubs with a further three coaches.
East Midland Motor Services, Ltd.. require 10 buses and six coaches of this pattern. The company have over. 30 Tiger Cub buses. A furthers\order for six Titan 8-ft.-wide double-deck els has also been placed by East Midland.
SLIDING ROOF NOT ESSENTIAL THE Ministry of Transport this week
corrected an announcement (The Commercial Motor last week) about the new regulations which seek to exempt dual-purpose vehicles from speed limits outside built-up areas. One of the requirements which a vehicle must satisfy to enjoy exemption is that. except in the case of four-wheel-drive vehicles, it must be permanently fitted with a rigid roof, whether or not incorporating a sliding panel. The Ministry stated earlier that the roof must have a sliding panel.
CUMMINS TURN TO BLOWERS
THE latest entrant into the ranks of 1 engine manufacturers who use exhaust turbo-blowers to increase power is the Cummins Engine Co., Inc., of Columbus, Indiana, U.S.A.
Known as the JT-6 Turbodiesel. the new engine is claimed to develop 175 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.p.m. It is a sixcylindered unit, having a bore of 104.77 mm. and a stroke of 117 min., giving a swept volume of 6.57 litres, and its net weight is 1.615 lb. This illustrates the advantage of turboblowing to obtain a high power-weight ratio.
