THE Yorkshire Licensing Authority has rejected the application by 16 bus operators for increased rates for scholars' contract tickets (The Commer(ial Motor. July 29).

In his decision, announced last week, the Authority stated that the proposed increases would be " out of all proportion," and would result in hardship to parents as well as raising the costs of education authorities. He suggested, however, that a meeting between. the applicants and the 10 local authorities who objected might result in an adjustment in the charges.

The applicants were West Riding Automobile Co., Ltd., Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd.. Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co.. Ltd.. Hebble Motor Services. Ltd., Huddersfield Corporation, Messrs. T. Burrows and Sons, Wombwell, Exors. .01 S. Ledgard, S. Ledgard (IlkIcy), Ltd., S. Ledgard (Bradford), Ltd.. Doncaster Corporation, United Automobile Services, Ltd., York Pullman Bus Co.. Ltd., Farsley Omnibus Co., Ltd., Sheffield Corporation and Sheffield Joint Omnibus CornIllittee.

West Hartlepool Town Council, whose transport department lost more than £6,000 last year, have approved proposals designed to bring in an extra £15,000 a year.

Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., have reached agreement with Carlisle Corporation about an adjustment in the charge for workmen's multiple-journey tickets. Where an individual fare is 2d., the 12-journey tickets will cost Is. 6d.. instead of Is. 10d. The charge for 22-journey. 2d. tickets has been reduced from 3s. 5d. to 2s. 9d. Reductions have also been made in the cost of multiple-journey 2d. and 3A. tickets.

Following the publication on Monday of the transport department's financial report, Glasgow Transport Committee are expected to apply for an early increase in fares. Last year, the undertaking lost nearly 1200,000, turning the previous year's surplus into a deficit of £74,563. Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager, insists on an immediate increase. He suggests that motorbus, trolleybus and tram fares should be unified. This would mean an extension of the existing minimum rate of 2d. on trolleybuses and trams to motorbus services, A 2d. minimum fare is being sought by Maidstone Transport Department. It is also seeking the South Eastern Licensing Authority's permission to abolish early-morning returns and scholars' season tickets.

Oldham Transport Department, which is also seeking to raise its minimum fare from 11d. to 2d., revealed last week that evasion of payment was costing £22,500 a year.

Blackpool Town Council last week decided to reconsider a decision of the general purposes committee to grant free travel for council members on council business, and concessions for old people, when the chairman of the transport committee, Aid. R. W. Marshall, told them they would be throwing away at least £16,000 a year.

Aid. Marshall said the concessions had been granted without any consideration for the transport department. Last September it was estimated that there would be a loss of £55.000. but by reducing services and effecting other economies that figure had been reduced to 19.040.
