in Glasgow have a new problem to solve in the ever-growing number of taxis applying for hire in the city,
The exiSting by-laws were drawn up and stances fixed in 1924, When the number of taxis licensed in the city was 180. The number has now increased to 500, and the magistrates have decided that this should be the "ceiling."
The 500th cab has now been licensed and no more licences will be issued unless for replacement purposes. It has been decided that in 1950 all taxis licensed before 1936 must be withdrawn...
With the increase in the number of vehicles, existing taxi stands, particularly near railway stations,are becoming Congested. Suggestions have been made' t6 the railways that mcire taxis should be permitted to operate from inside the stations, but at present this concession is limited to one concern. The authorities are now considering the fixing of more taxi stands in other areas of the city.
