A CC ORDING to a preliminary Pl.survey, 70,403 circulars were issued from the Road Haulage Association's area offices in the drive to ensure that as many hauliers as possible Were given full information about the importance of original, permits and the need for making applications without delay. Every area was working at full pressure throughout July and members of the Association's staff handled 8,815 applications. The R.H.A. thinks it probable that nearly 8,000 more applications were sent in as a result of information given verbally (sometimes over the telephone) and in the large number of circulars issued.
Although priority of service was given to members, most areas were also able to get into touch with hauliers outside, and by this means, 662 new mernberS Were obtained.
It is .certain. that many hauliers who would have been entitled to original permits either did not apply or .applied too late. Hundreds of cases came to light in which ownership of the businesses had radically altered, resulting in the likely loss of the right to apply for, an original. permit. In all sueh instances, the operators were advised to submit application's with a covering letter. `.` The Commercial NI otor 4. understands that the Road Haulage Executive has ref used to accept applications made after the prescribed date.
