A CORRESPONDENT to The "Financial Times" wrote on August 6:—
" Rail traffic is declining generally and State monopoly gives no chance of recovery.
"On my June visit to Italy I found the State railways hopeless. The excellent road services get nearly all the traffic, passenger and goods, as they are not trammelled by political interference, but run by free competing companies. "The Italian taxpayers are saddled with the obsolescent railways, and with the wages of the idle and discontented railwaymen, while free workers are doing splendid work."
