Dennis Bros., Ltd., of Guildford, is building another turbine fire-engine for demonstration purposes, as well as those on order for Kingston-onThames (two), Birkenhead (one), and Glasgow (one). These will all be completed within the next three months, and each will be fitted with a sixcylinder engine.

County and Rural Contributions.

Fire-Brigade Committees will do well to remember, when the matter of out-district stations is under discussion, that there is evidence of a growing interest in the proposition for motor fire-engine services in county areas. Following the unfortunate destruction of several valuable and historic country mansions, in August of last year, we set out in some detail the arguments in favour of the establishment of county fire brigades, but changes in fixed policy are only brought about slowly. There have been, however, several cases of cooperation between county and urban authorities, and we look for a multiplication of such instances of joint action. With motor fire-engines cap

able of averaging close upon 30 miles an hour, it is obvious that every country house which has a telephonic connection should be within range.

Accumulator-propelled Engines.

Our Berlin correspondent writes :" I note that the N.A.G. is now turning its attention to electric-propelled chassis for fire-brigade work, although must confess to some degree of surprise that the company, which is connected with one of the greatest electric concerns in the whole world, namely, the Allgemeine-ElektrizitkitsGesellschaft, should not have taken up this branch long ago, instead of waiting for the lead of the DaimlerMarienfekle Co., upon whose departure I reported several months back."

At Rowley Regis.

The first annual sports of the Rowley Regis 1.5.D.C. Fire Brigade took place, on Saturday, the 31st ult., at Oid Hill. The most attractive item in the programme was the christening of the new Dennis fire-engine, to which the name "The Enterprise " was formally given by Mrs. Crewe, the wife of the chairman of the council. The chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee, Mr. J. E. Harris, and the chief officials of the Fire Brigade, were in attendance. Our illustrations at the foot of this page show the procession into the town, preceded by the town band and a number of school children, which took place earlier in the afternoon, and other incidents of the day.

Harrow Orders a Merryweather.

Harrow is to have a motor tireengine. Tests were recently carried out there, by Chief Officer G. W. Leader, with one of Merryweather's " Hatfield " petrol vehicles, which can attain a speed of 30 miles an hour on the level and ascend hills with gradients of 1 in 6. The engine was taken outside the school, where it pumped 450 gallons a minute at a pressure of 140 lb. to the square inch, taking water from the street hydrants. Afterwards, exhaustive hilt-climbing tests were made, and Peterborough Hill was ascended in the second gear, with 15 men on board. Other pumping tests were also made, and a 14 in. jet was throw-n to a height of 180 ft.
