The Cambridgeshire operation brought a number of offenders to book — including a German truck driver who was watching telly... Chris Tindall reports.

AN INTELLIGENCE-led spot check of trucks involving Cambridgeshire Police, Vosa and HM Revenue and Customs (H M RC) officers found a third of vehicles stopped were flouting the law.

Police were shocked by one German driver who was pulled over for watching a 17in television while driving a 40-tonner.Another UK-registered LGV was 4.5 tonnes over the weight limit and running on red diesel. And a fully laden 40-tonner belonging to a Birmingham-based company was being driven with a broken front offside leaf spring. The vehicle's brakes and suspension were faulty and the driver was found to have committed tachograph offences.

In total, 45 trucks were pulled over and the detection rate was 33.5%.The police say they are seeing increasing numbers of Irish, Lithuanian and Polish-registered vehicles breaking the law.

Sergeant Simon Goldsmith of Cambridgeshire Police says the proximity of Felixstowe Port and two main arterial routes running through the county, the A14 and the Al (M), are reasons for the relatively high detection rates.

-We are always intelligence-led and we target companies to look at, people who are repeat offenders." Goldsmith adds." I have to be honest, though, most are foreigners and the Irish,Polish and Lithuanian [registered vehicles] are a good bet to stop as well.We have to keep chipping away at it."
