• Iveco Ford is winding down its long-running allegiance to the air-cooled diesel with the news that it is to drop the 150kW (204hp) vee-six Deutzengined 2420D Cargo from its six-wheeler range.
The 194kW (263hp) naturally-aspirated Deutz unit, currently used in the 300.25 Maggie eight-legger is also being phased out, but it will be superseded by a new version of the 13.38-litre air-cooled engine which is capable of meeting the forthcoming 88/77 EEC gaseous emissions regulations which come into effect on 1 October this year.
The final batch of 25 24201) Cargos will be produced at lyeco Ford's Langley truck plant before the end of August.
The decision to drop the Deutz option from the 6x4 Cargo follows "a tailing off in interest" in the 9.57-litre F6L 413E2 vee-six engine, and the arrival of a new version of the Cummins-powered 2421C Cargo which is available with a rear-mounted power take-off — an option previously offered only on the Deutz-powered 2420D.
The rear-mounted Knowles PTO on the 2421C is fixed between the engine and gearbox as an alternative to a front-end crankshaft mounted type.
It consists of a single train of three gears in an alloy casing, with one gear mounted on the end of the crankshaft and the other two on heavy-duty roller bearings. It can be used with proprietary pumps from Chelsea and Edbro.
A sandwich-type Knowles PTO on a Cummins C Seriespowered Cargo 2421C mixer chassis would weigh around 60kg — about 250kg less than a donkey engine installation. It costs £1,510.
Few details are available on the replacement Deutz engine in the 300.25. It is expected to remain naturally-aspirated, but with a revised fuel-injection system to reduce emission levels.
Power and torque output will be similar to the current F81.513 power unit.
Production of the existing right-hand-drive 300.25 chassis will be run down in the approach to 1 October, with the last models sold before 1 April 1991.
The new-engined 300.25 is likely to appear around the second quarter of 1991.
lveco Ford says that some an of its Maggie sales are currently made up by the naturally-aspirated 300.25 and that any changes will be "unlikely to jeopardise that business".
E The long-awaited driveaxle air-suspension option on the Turbostar tractive unit is being phased in. Operators can order the 190.36 tractor with an air-suspended drive axle, and the same option will be available on the 190.32 TEC tractor by the middle of the year. The most powerful 190.48 Turbostar gets the air option by the end of the year.
