• John Moore is to succeed Jack Ashwell as national secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union. He was formerly the union's southeast road transport officer. Et Leading union officials are establishing closer links with European unions, John Edmonds, general secretary of the General and Municipal Boilermakers' Union, believes that by the mid-1990s, there will be four or five British "super unions", whose strength will result from close ties with their European counterparts.
The GMB expects to have set up links with a leading European union within three years, and is discussing opening an office in Brussels.
