In Mr. Brockington's -The Next 10 Years" feature published on March 22 we were rather surprised to see the remark : "A 40ft laden container may weigh 30 tons and this is too heavy for an artic." The fact that we are currently operating, experimentally, a 42-tong.c.w, artic comprising a Volvo F.B.88 and a Hands 40ft fully laden container carrier rather contradicts this statement by a senior member of the Volvo engineering staff with whom we have co-operated on this venture.

The Volvo bogie, which is normally rated at 16 tons, is being loaded to 18 tons for this prototype application and although this artic is running outside the current British C and U Regulations none of the axles is loaded in excess of the permitted maximum of 9 tons.

You will no doubt recall the journey made to Scotland in this vehicle by your technical journalists Wilding and Cater last year and fully reported in COMMERCIAL MOTOR dated November 10 1967.

A. R. HOW Public Relations Officer, Hands Trailers Ltd.
