• The first Bristol buses equipped with two-way radio went into service last week— and the scope of "Operation Crime Stop" widened.
The radios will be carried on all city services, primarily in a bid to improve operational control and to guard against acts of hooliganism. But they could also be used by bus crews to alert police of suspicious incidents in the city.
Mr. Frederick Dark, Bristol Omnibus Company's traffic manager, said: "We have been in this scheme since its inception. In the past, when the crews have seen anything suspicious they have had to wait until they saw a policeman or could ring the police from a telephone kiosk. Now they can radio straight into the control room, which would immediately dial 999."
